New Residents Checklist:
- Establish Residency
- Register your cars
- Change your driver’s license*
- Register to Vote
- If you have one, register your dog
- If you own property, make sure the correct mailing address is on your tax card
How to Establish Residency: You must do this before anything else….
- Bring proof of Identity: driver’s license (any state) or other federal ID
- Proof of Walpole address: tax bill, utility bill, lease
- One piece of USPS metered mail addressed to you
- IF YOU HAVE A PO BOX: you must prove physical address & PO Box
How to Register your cars:
- Step 1 = establish your residency (see above)
- Bring your Driver’s License or Govt Issued ID (from any state)
- Bring Title or proof of Lease or Lien Holder (recent bill is good)
- Bring odometer reading
We will register your car and apply for a NH title when you come. You will leave with a new registration for NH and you will get the title in the mail in about a month. Once you have registered the car, you have 10 days to get it inspected. If your car is leased or has a lien, the new title will go to your lienholder.
How to Change your driver’s License:
- We cannot do this in Walpole, it must be done in Keene at the DMV at 149 Emerald St

*Your new car registration can be used as proof of address & residency as long as it was issued in the last 60 days.
How to register to vote:
- Bring a government issued Photo ID
- Bring proof of US Citizenship (Certificate of Naturalization, Certified Birth Certificate, US Passport,/Passport card or an FS-240)
- You will fill out a voter registration affidavit at the Town Clerk’s Office
- You can also register on voting day
How to Register your dog:
- Bring records from your vet proving rabies vaccination and spay/neuter if applicable
- To be eligible for senior discount, bring government issued ID
- If you have 5+ dogs you can register as a kennel which is cheaper
- If your dog is a puppy do not come and register the puppy until he/she has had a rabies shot
How to make sure the correct MAILING address is on your tax card:
- Check at the NH Tax Kiosk website
- Check Tax Card at Town Hall
- Come to Town Clerk’s Office and ask
- If you need to change the mailing address either go to Selectboard office and fill out a form or s.downing [at] walpolenh.us (email) or send a letter to Sarah Downing, Town of Walpole, PO Box 729, Walpole, NH 03608. DO NOT CALL. Any change request MUST be in writing or in an email.
