Mail your renewal in and save time

Current Walpole, North Walpole, and Drewsville residents don’t have to come to the Town Hall at 34 Elm Street to renew the registration(s) for their vehicles.  While we welcome your visit, you may find it more convenient to renew by mail.  All you have to do is call our office, have your registration(s) or copies of registration(s) in front of you and we will advise you how much money will be needed for the Town and State portion of your renewal.  You will mail the payments for the Town and State along with photocopies of your registration(s) and a self addressed stamped envelope to P.O. Box 756, Walpole. We will process your renewal and promptly return it to you in the envelope you provided.  **Because of the documents required, if you sell your old car and buy a new one, unfortunately, you still must take the time to do the registration in person.

For New residents

If you’ve recently moved from another state, one of the first questions is usually “Where is the nearest DMV office where I can register my car?”  Like most residents of other states, New Hampshire residents are required to register their motor vehicles every year, but they go to their local Town Clerk’s office to do it.  The Clerk prepares the registration, prepares an application for the New Hampshire Certificate of Title (if necessary), and the applicant pays a personal property tax based on the value of the vehicle.  The tax is based on the original list price of the vehicle without options (suggested retail price).  The tax rate for the current model year is $18/$1000 of the list price.  The rate then drops in $3 increments to $15, $12, $9, $6 and $3.  In New Hampshire, most cars are registered in the birth month of the owner, and the tax is pro-rated from the date of registration to the birth month.  Lease vehicles and corporate vehicles are registered alphabetically throughout the year.

The municipal registration tax is prorated according to the year and make of the vehicle.  There is also a New Hampshire State tax payable to the State of New Hampshire – MV, based on the weight of the vehicle.  The Clerk will require separate payments by check or cash for the Town and State of New Hampshire.  For most registrations, you can complete the process of registering your car at the Town Clerk’s office and avoid the trip to the NH DMV office.

New Hampshire allows 60 days to transfer a registration.  After registering the car, you can arrange for automobile insurance.  New Hampshire is not a compulsory insurance state.

What is required?

Current resident registration renewal

Walpole, North Walpole, Drewsville residents must present current registration(s) for the vehicle(s) they wish to renew.  Current residents registering a vehicle for the first time must present the title, certificate of origin, or a title application for any vehicle model year 1991 or newer with current Odometer reading.  For 1990 and older vehicles, a bill of sale is required, along with the valid NH registration, a VIN validation form (TDMV 19A), or the previous owner’s title.  We must have two documents.

New resident registrations

New residents will need proof of residency, a current out-of-state registration, and the title (with current odometer reading) or the lienholder information (name & address) for any vehicle.  A driver’s license, and rent, utility, mortgage, lease agreement or telephone bills clearly displaying the resident physical address normally provide tangible proof of residence.

Inspections

Within 10 days after registering your vehicle, you must have it inspected.  Official Inspection Station facilities are usually local service stations or automobile dealers authorized to inspect motor vehicles in the State of New Hampshire.  You can identify authorized facilities by the prominent display of an Official New Hampshire Inspection Station sign.  Many of these facilities operate by appointment only, so it is good to check ahead with a station convenient to you.  Official New Hampshire Inspection Stations will affix a certificate of inspection to the windshield displaying the expiration month.
